Esimene päev: ESMASPÄEV, 20. märts 2017//Day 1: MONDAY, March 20th 2017.

The first night was behind us. Last night when I noticed slippers and a warm fleece on my bed, I just considered it as Sicilian hospitality but in the morning I was really grateful because it was pretty chilly in the morning. I guess it’s just a warmer climate country’s thing, no heating or anything. For breakfast I was offered some sponge cake and some warm milk with hot chocolate which would also resume being my breakfast for the entire week.

After all this we headed towards the school where the flag ceremony, opening speeches and videos from each group introducing their country were shown. After this there was supposed to be a fifteen minute break which of course turned into an hour long ‘’smoking break’’  but we Estonians didn’t mind of course. It gave us a fantastic opportunity to turn our noses towards the sun to get some tanning done. At this moment we learned an interesting thing, everyone respected the Estonians in a fascinating way, as if we were an endangered species. We were constantly flooded with people who wanted to take pictures or just talk to us which undeniably was a pleasure and it was also a good opportunity to practice my English. After this long break it was time to form teams which would work together until the end of the trip. The first day was planned for us to see and meet everyone, our team members, the school and the city we would stay in for a week. During the fieldtrip that followed we would see all the tourist attractions – theaters, churches and parliament buildings. We heard interesting facts about the history of Sicily and the buildings themselves.

After the city tour was concluded, the obligatory part was over and it was time to return home to rest for the night ahead but instead of going home, with our hosts, we went to the main street to buy ourselves some clean clothes because our luggage was still hopelessly lost and we didn’t really want to dive into our hosts closet again. To finish the night all the Estonians and their hosts would gather at a friend’s house for a pasta night where we would experience the local cuisine and even had the chance to try the local arancini’s. To my surprise even us the Estonians who are usually very held back and quiet, would dance with the locals like there was no tomorrow.

In conclusion it was a very spirited day filled with laughter and many new interesting acquaintances. All in all it was a great start to a very memorable trip.
